With key defender Nathan Grima questionable for Round 1 against Essendon after missing out on Werribee's season opener, Luke Delaney has put his hand up for a senior position with a dominant performance for North Ballarat.

Development Manager Jason Lappin told kangaroos.com.au Delaney was "a strong physical presence all day, despite Werribee running over the top of the Roosters in the second half."

He was particularly influential in the air, which bodes well for a possible call-up given the marking ability of the Essendon forwards including Michael Hurley.

Lappin said the younger Delaney brother was also impressive.

"Cam played on small forwards for most of the game and was effective in that role. He used the ball very well and rarely made a skill error.”

Of North Melbourne’s defenders, Brad McKenzie was a stand-out and Gavin Urquhart also had an impact in the early stages, before the Roosters capitulated.

"Brad played all game in defence on Werribee’s high half forwards. He was particularly damaging by foot in the first half as a rebounding defender.

"Gav was very influential in the first quarter and was directly involved in a number of North Ballarat's six first-quarter goals with his long kicking and speed really penetrating the game."

Up against a former AFL listed player in Will Sullivan, Ben Mabon also held his own in the ruck.

Still very much in the developing stage of his career and looking to get regular games under his belt, Mabon earned a number of clearances with his follow-up work from stoppages.

Lappin said Cruize Garlett was effective in the first half but faded out of the game as the Tigers went on their run after the main break, while Max Warren, in his first VFL senior game, adapted to the step up from the TAC Cup well.

"Max played on the wing and did a couple of nice things with the ball in the second half as he adjusted to the pace of the game.”

In attack, Aaron Black was dangerous playing as a key-position option and was constantly creating chances, even late.

The action wasn't confined to the VFL seniors, as Cam Richardson took to the field for the first time this year.

"Cam made a successful comeback and won many possessions on the wing with his hard running."
