North Melbourne champion Brent Harvey has been the subject of some criticism at times this year, but says comments from outside the four walls at Aegis Park should be taken with a grain of salt.

“People can criticise you from afar. As long as the coach and the coaches think I’m doing a good job that’s all I’m concerned about,” Harvey said.

The 334-gamer silenced his knockers once again with a 29-possession, four-goal haul against the Suns on Saturday night, though his focus is on the team rather than any personal adoration.

“It’s always good to contribute. Kicking four goals was probably a good thing for me. I haven’t kicked four goals this year. My role is changing as I get a little bit older…I just have to contribute by playing my role.”

The club’s first win since Round 9 didn’t come easy. Pushed to the final siren by the Gary Ablett-inspired Suns, the Kangaroos held firm under immense pressure, winning by just seven-points.

But the former captain believes an interstate win still has plenty of merit.

“It’s always a relief when you travel and come away with the four points,” he added.

“We knew if we went there and played the way we wanted to play, we could come away with the four-points.”

Despite his optimism, Harvey is happy to admit much improvement is needed for the Roos to be competitive in the next fortnight against Adelaide and St Kilda.

“There are certainly areas where we need to improve, but going forward I think we can take some confidence out of it (the win).

“The next two weeks we’ve got some really tough teams. We’ve got to put all our eggs in one basket this week and give it a really good crack. We are looking forward to it.

Questioned on whether the victory would ease the pressure on his team’s fortunes, Harvey was forthright in his response.

“I wouldn’t say that. We got beaten by 100-points two weeks and ago and only just scraped over the line against the Gold Coast…we’ve got a lot of questions to answer.”
