On This Day - April 14
April 14 has been a day where North Melbourne's fortunes have fluctuated. From a 10-goal win to an 80-point loss in 2001 against Sydney, anything and everything
Round 3 2001
North Melbourne 4.2 (26), 6.2 (38), 10.2 (62), 11.5 (71)
Sydney 3.4 (22), 7.10 (52), 13.12 (90), 23.13 (151)
Goals: Carey (4), Rocca (2)
Brownlow Medal: 3 - Cresswell (SYD), 2 - Goodes (SYD), 1 - Stafford (SYD)
2001 was a year of transition for North Melbourne. The era of dominance that carried it through the 90's had finished and it was evident throughout 2001 that there would be some struggles moving forward. Sydney's 16-goal second half was proof of this.
Some of the youngsters in the North Melbourne team that day went on to carry the team for most of the decade included Daniel Harris, Brady Rawlings and Shannon Watt.
Round 3 1984
North Melbourne 5.6 (36), 8.12 (60), 11.15 (81), 14.17 (101)
Footscray 8.2 (50), 9.4 (58), 17.10 (112), 25.14 (164)
Goals: Bryant (4), Kelly (3)
Brownlow Medal: 3 - Hawkins (FO), 2 - Williams (FO), 1 - Rickman (FO)
After a minor premiership in 1983, the following year started out with high expectations for North. However there were warning signs with this defeat to Footscray, which was just a middle of the table side in 1984.
The total games played by the side on this day was indicative of a club in transition. Two players, Keith Greig and Wayne Schimmelbusch, had played 250 plus games, while there was three players, Laurie Dwyer, Mark Lisle and Angelo Petraglia, had a combined total of four games.
Round 2 1979
Footscray 5.4 (34), 8.5 (53), 12.10 (82), 13.16 (94)
North Melbourne 3.1 (19), 10.4 (64), 14.7 (91), 20.13 (133)
Goals: Blight (8), Byrne (2), Ebert (2), Schimmelbusch (2)
After five successive Grand Finals (or six if you count the drawn game in 1977), North Melbourne wasn’t quite at its same standard in 1979. Despite that, there was still some impressive performances throughout the season - the last quarter on this day against Footscray an example.
In his last season of VFL football, this was Stan Alves' 250th game. Coming to North after twelve seasons with Melbourne, Alves played 40 of his 266 games at the Kangaroos and was a vital part of the 1977 premiership campaign. Alves then went on to coach St Kilda for five seasons.
Round 2 1973
Carlton 5.4 (34), 10.6 (66), 15.11 (101), 18.15 (123)
Norrh Melbourne 3.2 (20), 7.7 (49), 12.9 (81), 14.12 (96)
Goals: Kekovich (4), Henshaw (2), Peterson (2), Schimmelbusch (2), Wade (2)
After its opening day win to start the year, North was brought back to earth by eventual Grand Finalists Carlton, with a 27-point loss.
In a measure of the rapid improvement North was experiencing, just 11 rounds later it would face Carlton again and defeat them. Doug Wade unsurprisingly, was the catalyst with four goals on that day.
Round 1 1956
North Melbourne 5.4 (34), 6.4 (40), 14.8 (92), 15.8 (98)
St Kilda 2.0 (12), 4.2 (26), 4.2 (26), 5.11 (41)
Goals: Easton (4), Dugdale (2), Eastmure (2), Spencer (2)
To kick off a season during which the Olympics came to Melbourne, North enjoyed one of just three wins in 1956. A wooden spoon came to the club for the first time since 1940.
This game was noteworthy for the debut of future Brownlow Medal winner and Team of the Century member Noel Teasdale. Named in a forward pocket in the Team of the Century, Teasdale went on to tie for the Brownlow Medal in 1965 alongside Ian Stewart. Stewart was originally declared the sole winner on a count-back but in later years, Teasdale received a retrospective medal.
