LESS than two weeks ago North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said Aaron Black needed to work on areas of his game before he could demand a spot in the Kangaroos' team.

Black is obviously a fast learner, because when he was given his senior chance at Etihad Stadium on Sunday against the Brisbane Lions he grabbed it as surely as he marks on the lead.

In just his second AFL game, Black, 21, brought a youthful energy and athleticism to North's forward line against the Lions.

After developing his game in the VFL with North Ballarat for the past two and a bit seasons, Black showed he was a strong overhead mark and an accurate kick for goal, scoring 3.0 against the Lions.

But Roos fans would have been most excited by a third-quarter goal screaming of the freakish talent that convinced North to re-sign him for another two seasons two weeks ago.

Spoiled in a marking contest, Black kept his feet as two Lions opponents lost theirs, then spun onto his non-preferred left foot and snapped truly from a testing angle.

After the game, Scott said North had long been aware of Black's attacking talents but had asked him to work on his second efforts, defensive pressure and keeping his feet in contests.

Scott said Black's efforts in these areas had been the most pleasing part of his game against the Lions.

In addition to his left-foot goal, he dished off two goal assists that would have pleased Scott in the second quarter.

At the eight-minute mark he led out, took a bouncing ball cleanly and hit Brent Harvey with a handball that set up the former North skipper to run in unopposed and kick a close-range goal.

Seventeen minutes later, Black led for the ball but was spoiled in a marking contest. However, he fought on when he hit the ground, handballing on his knees to Sam Wright, who capitalised on his good work.

For Scott, it was evidence Black is becoming a "more complete forward" who offers North "something very different".

"Blacky's different to all of the key-position players we've got. He adds some real spark," Scott said.

Black told AFL.com.au after the game it had been "nice to have a bit of an impact" in his second AFL game, but even more pleasing to see the fruits of his recent hard work on his game.

"Brad made it pretty clear I had some work to do on my second efforts, keeping my feet in the contest and those sort of things," Black said.

"I've still got a way to go but it was good to be able to dish off a couple of goal assists and stay in the contest a bit more."

In case Black's effort against the Lions wasn't enough of a boost for North supporters, the former Peel Thunder player says he has no intention of returning home to Western Australia any time soon.

"It was great to sign the new contract with North. I'm a WA boy, but I love it over here in Melbourne, more than Perth now," Black said.

"So it's great to be here for another two years and, hopefully, it will be a while longer than that."
