When you have hundreds of screaming kids demanding your attention, it’s difficult to know how to respond.

This was the scenario confronting many Kangaroos players in Buninyong, which is ten minutes drive south of Ballarat, on Tuesday.

Visiting the small town’s local Primary School was a host of Roos including captain Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Matt Campbell, Nathan Grima, Michael Firrito, Hamish McIntosh, Ben Speight, Robbie Tarrant, Ben Mabon, Marcus White, Luke Delaney, Ben Cunnington, Daniel Pratt, Scott Thompson, Aaron Black, Sam Wright, Aaron Edwards, Ben Ross, Jamie Macmillan and Brayden Norris.

Each player was assigned to a station with a focus on honing the children’s football skills.

“I’ve got them for goal kicking and as you can see, we’ve got a fair few stations around doing different skills with the kids. They’re running around and it looks like they’re having a fair bit of fun,” Rookie Marcus White said.

“These camps are great fun and it’s good because we get to get around the community a fair bit and see a lot of different people.”

For Ben Cunnington, dealing with kids comes naturally.

“Growing up in a big family, I’m used to the young ones so this is fun. We’re spending about four hours here today with about 500 kids just teaching them some new skills.”

Luke Delaney had a tough job teaching his pupils the art of taking a high mark.

“I’ve got ‘em all lined up and I’ll put a bit of a high bomb into the air and see if they can hold onto it. We’ve got a couple of talented types here that have held onto a few but some others have had a bit of trouble!

“Just seeing the big smiles on their faces, they love getting out and running around and we love spending the time with them.”

But White was quick to point out this his mind was also on Wednesday night’s first real competitive hit-out for 2011. The boys will go head to head in an intra-club match at the North Ballarat Football Club at around 6pm.

“Getting back into games in the pre-season is the best part and all the boys are looking forward to it,” White added.

"We’ve got through the hard times and getting into the competitive stuff is fun. It’s good to get the young blokes in and rough them up a bit,” he joked.
