1997

In: Shannon Grant, Pick 27 (Brad Stephens)
Out: Wayne Schwass (Sydney)

One of North Melbourne’s most high-profile trades was made in 1997, when champion wingman and 1996 Premiership star, Wayne Schwass, was traded to the Sydney Swans for 20-year-old Shannon Grant, and pick 27.

Schwass, the 1994 and 1995 Syd Barker Medallist, headed north after 184 games for the club, and went on to play 98 games for the Swans.

Grant, who had been on the losing Swans’ side in the 1996 decider, was a huge success at North.

In 10 years at the Roos, Grant played 243 games, booted 323 goals, and was the Norm Smith Medallist in the 1999 Grand Final win over Carlton.

He earned a position in the 2005 All-Australian team, before retiring in 2008.

The pick involved in the exchange was used on Brad Stephens, who played two games for the Roos.
