While some coaches play down the relevance of a opposition player being sidelined, Brad Scott’s wry smile on Thursday during his media conference suggested he was happy Swans’ star Adam Goodes had been suspended and would miss the Round 4 clash.

“I’m sure Adam Goodes checks the fixture every year to find out when they play North Melbourne,” Scott said smiling.

“If he’s out of form we play him back into form, and if he’s in form we put him into better form.”

Goodes’ record during Scott’s tenure speaks volumes for the North coach’s satisfaction.

Scott Thompson kept the two-time Brownlow Medallist in check last time the teams met, but that still resulted in a 19 possession, two goal game.

In a one-point win against the Kangaroos in round 15 2010, Goodes had 33 possessions and booted three goals, an effort good enough to win him the three Brownlow votes.

11 weeks earlier against North Melbourne he polled two votes for 21 disposals and two goals.

“He’s obviously a huge loss for them. He’s a terrific player. A player we’ve struggled to counter in the past, so it’s disappointing for him…but we’re mildly elated,” Scott added laughing.

They often say one player doesn’t make a team, but minus a champion who has averaged 20 possessions and more than two goals in the Swans’ streak of five victories over the Kangaroos, it surely has to make a massive difference.
