AFL R22 preview: Roos head to Canberra hunting Giant scalp

North Melbourne travels to Canberra on Sunday hoping to take a long-awaited top-eight scalp

North Melbourne travels to Canberra on Sunday hoping to take a long-awaited top-eight scalp.

The Kangaroos delivered an improved performance against the Saints on Sunday, and will be stinging from the defeat, after surging to within three points in the closing minutes.

They face a Greater Western Sydney team looking to consolidate its finals position.

Round 22, GWS Giants v North Melbourne
Where: Corroboree Group Oval Manuka, Canberra, ACT
When: Sunday, August 10 at 1.40pm AEST
How to watch: Foxtel, Kayo Sports

    The opposition

Though on track for finals, the Giants are reeling after being on the wrong end of a demolition by the Western Bulldogs last week.

Tall Dogs Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy ran riot in the 88-point win, and Adam Kingsley's men will be motivated to hit back in Canberra.

Toby Greene, Jack Buckley, Josh Kelly and Brent Daniels were among the big names sidelined against the Dogs.

Greene will be available on Sunday after serving a one-match suspension for striking, but Buckley (calf), Kelly (calf) and Daniels (adductor) will again be watching on.

Spearhead Jesse Hogan could also be in doubt to face the Roos after struggling with a foot injury last weekend.

    What the coach has said

North Melbourne senior coach Alastair Clarkson on Sunday: "Our endeavour (against the Saints) was really strong, but the bottom line is we just couldn’t get it inside 50 enough. It was a single figure margin that split the two sides at the end of the game but it was a double-figure margin in the inside-50 differential. We need to work out a way we can get the ball inside 50 and hold it in there a bit more often. We're not too bad at converting the chances once we get it in there but we just need to get a greater volume of them."

On the weeks ahead: "It's a tough grind. We're making progress but we'd like the progress to be more in terms of wins and we're not quite there at the moment. But the mood and morale is good within the four walls of the footy club."

    Last time we met

It's been 17 months since the sides last faced off in last season's opening round.

Star Giants forward Jesse Hogan was on song, kicking six goals as GWS won by 39 points on home turf in Sydney.

Giant onballers Lachie Whitfield, Stephen Coniglio and Tom Green led the way for the winners, while a debutant named Colby McKercher showed promise for the Kangaroos, gathering nine touches in the opening term and finishing with 22 for the day.

AFL R22 match report: Giants prove too strong for Roos

Greater Western Sydney has maintained its position in the top eight after taking care of North Melbourne by 54 points in Canberra

Greater Western Sydney has maintained its position in the top eight after taking care of North Melbourne by 54 points in Canberra.

Having had 10 days to process the startling 88-point thumping by the Western Bulldogs, the Giants pulled away from the Kangaroos early on Sunday at Manuka Oval.

Leading by 58 points midway through the third quarter, GWS took the foot off the pedal as the Roos fought back late in the 20.13 (133) to 12.7 (79) win.

    08:13

Callum Brown led the Giants' goalkicking with an equal career-high five, while former Essendon and Western Bulldogs star Jake Stringer was lively with three before he was tactically subbed out in the third term.

Young forward Aaron Cadman kicked four goals, moving to 42 for the season.

Cadman should have finished with at least five, but missed one chance when he inexplicably played on in the goalsquare and was caught holding the ball.

Midfielders Tom Green (25 disposals) and Finn Callaghan (31) were exceptional, making sure North's talented onball brigade didn't get the Kangaroos into the contest.

GIANTS v KANGAROOS Full match coverage and stats

The Giants now sit at 14-7, ahead of games against Gold Coast and St Kilda to complete their home and away campaign.

Due to their percentage, the Giants may need to win both their remaining matches to be guaranteed of playing finals.

Set to finish in the bottom three, North was delighted with the debuts of Cooper Trembath and Geordie Payne.

Trembath made the most of his opportunities up forward, kicking an equal team-high three goals.

Trembath's family became emotional in the stands after the 19-year-old - a mid-season rookie draft selection this year - booted his first goal.

Former Sydney star Luke Parker continued his impressive first season with the Kangaroos, gathering 28 possessions and a team-high nine clearances.

North will have a chance to leapfrog Richmond into 16th on the ladder when it faces the Tigers in Hobart next Sunday.

    Roo's magic moment on debut
Cooper Trembath's grandmother stole the show in the first quarter, after the debutant slotted the first goal of his AFL career. Dabbing at her eyes with a tissue, her emotion at her grandson's big moment was evident - despite her deep-rooted love for the Western Bulldogs. The tears continued to flow when Trembath kicked his second and third goals, with her Dogs-themed knitted gloves on full display.
