The experienced five-year-plus Kangaroos returned on Monday morning for their first official training session ahead of the 2023 season.

Returning to the club in terrific shape was back-to-back Syd Barker Medal winner Jy Simpkin, who led the way in the 1.8km shuttle run which also included some draftees.

The star midfielder's win comes two weeks after hard-nosed, second-year Roo Jackson Archer blitzed the same trial for the first-to-fourth-year players.

Behind Simpkin was one of the club's several fresh recruits in former Hawk Daniel Howe, while gun defender Luke McDonald finished third.

Towering talls Todd Goldstein and Tristan Xerri both crossed the line at the same time in fourth, as did Kayne Turner, who was re-listed by the club on rookie draft day.

Liam Shiels - another former Hawk and the club's latest list addition - showed he's still a powerful runner by coming in equal seventh, alongside the No.1 pick of the Rookie Draft Blake Drury, who has began his time at Arden Street in impressive fashion.
