Dream Team market watch: Round nine
North Melbourne draftee Ryan Bastinac has been one of the bargain buys in the 2010 Dream Team competition.
AMID all the bluster about Barry Hall's biffo with pretty much everything in a blue and white jumper on Saturday, one of 2010's great Toyota AFL Dream Team performances went almost unnoticed.
Bulldog full back Brian Lake racked up a whopping 192 points against North Melbourne, driven largely by a whopping 35 kicks and 22 marks, to send his value soaring by $38,000 this week.
Remarkably, the prolific Dog had well over 100 points racked up by half time, giving Dream Team fanatics reason to cast their minds back to legendary performances by the likes of Carlton champ Anthony Koutoufides almost a decade ago.
It's unclear whether any prescient DT coaches thought to hand Lake the captain's armband this week, but you can be sure those who did are telling their mates all about it right now.
And Lake's blinder wasn't the only good news story coming out of the kennel this weekend.
Ryan Hargrave has been a perennial DT talking point this season, enduring injuries and a form slump that sent his value plummeting by almost $120,000 after round six.
However, he looks to be on the way back after a 129-point game against the Roos and his value is yet to fully reflect his form rebound. Get in while you can.
With bargain buys exceptionally thin on the ground at the moment, some of the more interesting performances arose from Saturday night's thriller in Darwin between Melbourne and Port Adelaide.
Austin Wonaeamirri ($138,700) managed 47 points in his first game for more than 18 months. Not a stunning return by any means, but encouraging nonetheless. Whether he retains his place long-term - and his hamstrings stay in one piece - is yet to be seen.
Teammate Neville Jetta ($234,100) was much more prolific, racking up a whopping 117 points as a small forward. On the strength of that performance, he's far more likely to hang around for a few more weeks; the question is whether he can replicate that performance often enough to deliver a solid return to DT coaches.
Finally, Colin Sylvia looms as a tempting, if risky, selection for those seeking a boost to their midfield or forward stocks. At $324,800, he's dropped almost $100,000 from his opening price and is capable of 100-plus point scores with three under his belt already.
However, his inconsistency will be of concern, with those bumper efforts punctuated by 50s and 60s - not good enough for a sizeable outlay.
Speaking of not good enough, Lions skipper Jonathan Brown presents a continuing dilemma for DT coaches.
Rated at just $310,100, Brown has dropped more than $130,000 from his round three peak and thousands of coaches face crystallising their heavy losses if they offload him now. He looks clearly restricted by groin and abdominal issues and his 90-point game in round eight now looks to be an exception to the rule of 50-point scores.
There is no easy answer to this one. Sylvia could be a good get, while young Bulldog forward Jarrad Grant ($228,600) is averaging a handy 77 points a game which is more than one can currently expect from Brown.
West Coast's Ben McKinley ($284,100) is another who could fill the breach, having emerged as a key target along with Josh Kennedy in the Eagles' forward line.
Finally, there was little movement among the top 10 improvers and losers this week.
Michael Barlow, James Podsiadly and Matt Maguire still head the improvers, while Leon Davis, Richard Tambling and Brendan Fevola remain among 2010's biggest Dream Team disappointments.
