A versatile midfield prospect out of Sturt, Tom Powell entered his first season in the AFL off the back of a brilliant SANFL Under-18’s season.

Averaging over 35 disposals and 9 clearances per game in his draft year, Powell won the McCallum Tomkins Medal as the best player in the SANFL Under-18’s.

While typically deployed as an inside-midfielder, he’s also capable of fulfilling a role on the wing or in the forward line, with his high-level decision making and strong basic skills giving him versatility in the front half of the ground.

North Melbourne debut: Round 1, 2021

2021: Making his senior debut in the first game of the season, Powell kicked his first goal in AFL football with his first kick, with the major doubling as North’s first goal of the season.

He hit the ground running in the first half of the campaign, consistently registering strong disposal numbers as he adapted to the elite level, rarely struggling to get involved whether it be through the midfield or in the forward line.

Unlucky not to earn a NAB Rising Star nomination, his performances in Rounds 6 and 7, where he registered 25 and 23 disposals respectively, were his most complete of the season.

Unfortunately for Powell, pubic overload forced an early end to his year, with his final appearance of the season coming in Round 14’s loss to Brisbane.

His performances across those 13 games were enough to see him named as the club’s young player of the season, also registering a fourth-place finish in the AFLPA’s Best First Year player Award.

Powell’s primary aim for 2022 will be a return to full fitness, with the goal of breaking back into North’s best 22 and continuing his development, whether that be in his natural inside-midfield position, on the wing, or in the forward line.
