AFL R16 preview: High-flying Hawks await Roos in Tassie clash

North Melbourne will be looking to pick up back-to-back wins for the first time in 2025

North Melbourne will look to secure their second win on the bounce as they travel south to take on Hawthorn in Launceston.

The Roos will be full of confidence after last week’s 11-point victory over Carlton at the MCG, where they were able to hold off a late Blues’ fightback.

Round 16, Hawthorn v North Melbourne
    Where: UTAS Stadium, Launceston, TAS
When: Saturday, June 28 at 4.15pm AEST
How to watch: Foxtel, Kayo Sports

    The opposition

The Hawks will arrive in Launceston refreshed after a bye in round 15. A narrow three-point win over Adelaide in their last hit-out reaffirmed their status as one of the best teams in the competition.

Dylan Moore appears to have re-captured the form of last season which saw him rewarded with All-Australian honours, posing a threat with his speed and work at ground level.

Hawthorn captain James Sicily will be fighting to prove his fitness, while midfielder James Worpel also remains a chance to return.

    Running hot

Tom Powell has found plenty of the footy in recent weeks for the Kangaroos. He comes into the match riding high after a performance against the Blues last week that netted him a perfect 10 votes in the AFL Coaches Award.

The young midfielder was explosive out of the middle and finished the afternoon with a career-high 34 disposals, eight clearances and 614 metres gained.

    What the coach has said

North Melbourne senior coach Alastair Clarkson on Thursday morning: “We’re really keen … to see how far we’ve progressed (in the last eight weeks). We know we had to do a lot of work on stiffening up our defence.

    07:39

“We have been a lot stronger in that space, and it’s had us in the game, so the real test for us will be against a really, really good opponent this week whether we can hold up defensively once again.

“We got pulled apart by them when we played them in the last game of last year and we’ve changed some things to both personnel and the way that we defend. Let’s see how far we’ve been able to progress in that period of time.”

AFL R16 match report: Key Roos hurt in bruising loss to Hawks

North Melbourne will have injury concerns after a heavy defeat to Hawthorn in Launceston on Saturday evening

North Melbourne will have injury concerns after a bruising defeat to Hawthorn in Launceston on Saturday evening.

The Kangaroos were overrun by 85 points in a loss compounded by injuries to midfield gun George Wardlaw (concussion) and experienced defender Luke McDonald (shoulder).

HAWKS v KANGAROOS Full match coverage and stats

Jack Gunston kicked a career-high seven goals and Mabior Chol kicked five as the Hawks won 23.12 (150) to 9.11 (65) at UTAS Stadium.

Spearhead Nick Larkey held his head high as the Kangaroos' only multiple goalkicker, kicking five from eight shots on goal.

Luke Davies-Uniacke (28 disposals and 10 clearances) and Colby McKercher (a game-high 34 disposals) were also solid contributors, but the Roos were well beaten.

Hawthorn increased its lead at each change against a North Melbourne outfit coming off an upset win over Carlton.

The 33-year-old Gunston was in the thick of the action, with a one-handed pick-up in traffic in the goalsquare in the third quarter a highlight.

Gunston was well supported by Chol, who equalled his own career-best haul with five.

Hawthorn's Lloyd Meek outpointed Tristan Xerri with 37 hitouts to 31, with his side winning the clearances 44-30 and inside 50s 63-40.

Wardlaw was subbed out of the game in the second quarter after suffering another concussion when he collided with the shoulder of Conor Nash.

Former co-captain McDonald was withdrawn from action with a shoulder injury midway through the fourth quarter.

After improved defensive showings in recent weeks, it was the Kangaroos' biggest loss this season and the second-most points they have conceded.

Champions representing the club's proud history will gather on the ground for a spectacular pre-game ceremony at Marvel Stadium, with fans urged to be in their seats for 6.45pm.
