Wells' season over
North Melbourne midfielder Daniel Wells’ stunning season has come to an end with the club confirming he requires shoulder surgery.
The 26-year old initially jarred his shoulder in Round 19 against Carlton and aggravated it on the weekend against St Kilda.
“As soon as Daniel was ruled out by our medical team for this week’s match, we decided to send him in for surgery,” North Chief of Football Donald McDonald told kangaroos.com.au.
Playing in his best and most consistent season yet, Wells has averaged a career high 24 disposals, but Director of Medical Services Steve Saunders said getting him in for the operation was paramount.
“His arm was forced into a position that’s aggravated an old injury. It’s a small tear that just got to a point that we really need to deal with and have tidied up so he’s right for next season.
“We need to make sure he has the chance to have the surgery done and do all the necessary rehabilitation so that he can start our pre-season training camp in Utah without any compromise.”
Saunders was quick to point out that the injury is nothing too concerning.
“It is minor. We are very happy with what needs to be done and time frames it’s going to take but it’s certainly one of those things we don’t want him carrying into next year. We need to tidy it up straight away.”
Up-and-coming defender Cam Delaney was sent in for shoulder surgery today and has also had a premature end to his encouraging season.
Meanwhile McDonald has responded to former player Nathan Thompson’s call for Brendan Fevola to be given a chance at Aegis Park.
Thompson said Fevola's recent six week run of form, which has included 43 goals for the Casey Scorpions in the VFL, showed he could still play top level football.
"I would love North Melbourne to take him and for Brad Scott and the North Melbourne hierarchy to have a go at taking him and working with him with the off-field stuff," he said.
"I think that Brendan has turned himself around and deserves a chance and I would love to see him in the blue-and-white stripes next year."
But the Roos have knocked any such idea on the head.
“No, Brendan is not a part of our planning,” McDonald commented.
