Egan, North Melbourne's first known senior First Nations player, was a tall and adaptable ruck-forward who originally began his career at Carlton.
Born into the Gunditjmara community at Wallacedale in western Victoria, he played 36 matches for the Blues, including the 1932 Grand Final, before playing 15 games as a Shinboner.
In his first game for North against Footscray in Round 3, 1934, he was selected on the half-forward flank, a newspaper report noting his "fine high marking and long punt kicks".
He played in the next five rounds, alternating between the half-forward flank, centre half-back and full-back, making the best players list several times for his strong attacking football.
He didn't appear in the seniors again until Round 1, 1935, when he played as a follower, kicking a goal and being named among North Melbourne's best.
He was in and out of the team in 1935. North used him all over the ground in a further eight games, including his only win at the club, a five-point victory against Footscray in Round 16,1935 in which he was 19th man but came on in the third quarter. His final game for North came in a loss against Carlton the following week, playing in the forward pocket.
His son is Ted Lovett OAM (Fitzroy), his grandson is Essendon player Andrew Lovett and he has family connections to Wally Lovett (Collingwood and Richmond) and Nathan Lovett-Murray (Essendon).
