Johnson, a stalwart of the Kangaroos sides of the early 1950s, made a name for himself as an agile yet aggressive outside player who was also more than comfortable playing as a roving midfielder.

He formed strong partnerships with fellow onballers and club greats Allen Aylett and Albert Mantello.

One of at least seven children, Percy came from football royalty. His father 'Joe' Johnson was the AFL's first Indigenous player, who played 55 games for Fitzroy FC from 1904-06, including the 1904 and 1905 premiership sides. Thus began the Johnson dynasty.

Percy, who was only four weeks old when his father passed away, debuted for North in Round 11, 1951 on the half-forward flank, making the best players list in a win against Richmond.

Noted for his courage, he was a regular in the senior side over the next four seasons, generally on the wing or on the forward line.

In 1954, after only four senior games on the wing and two on the bench, he was brought back into the first semi-final team against Melbourne, to give North more rigour and pace.

The following season he played in nine North games, all losses. In 1956 he was granted a clearance to play for Fitzroy, but did not play a senior VFL game with them.

His son, also named Percy, played for Hawthorn, and his grandsons Robert and Trent Cummings played for Fitzroy.

His cultural identity is not known to the club.
