Kickett attracted the attention of North Melbourne's scouts after a record 46 votes in the 1987 Sandover Medal for WAFL team Claremont.

He moved to Central Districts in 1988, before being drafted by the Roos with pick 60 in the National Draft.

He showed flashes of brilliance for the Kangaroos, but played just 12 games for the club before being delisted.

He went on to play another 140 games with both Essendon and Sydney, where he became a cult hero, known for his athleticism, love of the torpedo punt, and ability to turn a match.

Part of a rich football family, Kickett is a Ballardong man whose nephews include Byron Pickett, Lance 'Buddy' Franklin, Dale Kickett and Jarrod Garlett. St Kilda great Nicky Winmar is his cousin.
