An imposing utility player, Bloomfield was a Wiradjuri man who played two seasons at Arden St.
He was recruited from ACT club Ainslie, where as a 16-year-old he played at centre half-forward against future Carlton star Alex Jesaulenko in the CANFL Grand Final. With some understatement, the Canberra Times noted: "young Alan Bloomfield will really have his hands full".
After moving to Melbourne, he played a couple of trial matches with North Melbourne in early 1969 but at 114kg he was told to lose weight and return.
He played several games in the reserves, before making his senior debut on the half-forward flank in Round 6, 1970 against Collingwood at Arden St.
He played in two wins in his 11 games in his first season, but only played in two senior games for North in 1971 - both wins - with further games in the reserves.
He was delisted at the end of the season.
