A Yorta Yorta man, Simpkin was selected with pick 12 in the 2016 National Draft.
After showcasing his clean skills, agility and composure in his early seasons, he emerged as one of the club's most important midfielders, combining endurance with an ability to break lines and win the contested ball.
He stepped up in leadership and performance during the early 2020s, winning back-to-back Syd Barker Medals in 2021 and 2022.
In 2023 and 2024 he served as co-captain alongside Luke McDonald, before taking on the sole captaincy role in 2025.
In early 2025, he was selected to represent the Indigenous All-Stars in a pre-season match against Fremantle, in which he claimed the Polly Farmer Medal for being best on ground.
