Gunaikurnai man Ahern was originally drafted to Greater Western Sydney at pick seven in the 2014 National Draft.
However multiple knee reconstructions marred the start to his career and in 2016 he was traded to the Kangaroos without making his debut for the Giants.
After waiting 1285 days to play his first AFL game, Ahern made up for lost time as he collected 29 disposals in a fairytale debut against Brisbane in Round 11, 2018.
