Remembered as one of the most exciting footballers to watch of his generation, Johnson moved to North Melbourne after an outstanding career in South Australia.

With West Adelaide, he became the first Aboriginal player to play in a SANFL Premiership, in 1961.

He started his North career in dazzling fashion, starring on debut against South Melbourne in the opening round of 1965.

With 16 games under his belt, he won North's best first year player award, and was named by Channel 9 as the VFL recruit of the year.

An Adnyamathanha man described as "courageous and talented", he played 31 games over four seasons with the club. He played a notable game in North's 1967 Reserves Grand Final, starring on the wing in a 24-point win over Richmond.

Disenchanted after a disagreement with the match committee after being dropped in 1966, he played only a few senior games in 1967-68, before transferring to VFA Dandenong.
