The only son in a family of seven children, Lambe was born in Collingwood, Victoria to Aida (nee Waterman) and Alfred Edward Lambe.
Lambe played 41 games with North Melbourne's VFA team from 1922 until 1924.
His first game for North Melbourne's VFL team in 1925 was in Round 1 against Geelong, when he was selected in the back pocket. The Sporting Globe newspaper noted, "Lambe did well".
He had a solid career over the following three seasons but only played in 10 winning games and had one draw.
In a winning game at Arden St against Hawthorn on June 6, 1925, Lambe broke his leg just above the ankle, thus missing the next six weeks.
In 1931 he transferred to VFL Footscray, playing 31 games with them over two seasons.
He married Alice May (nee Greensmith) in 1927. She was the sister of teammate Harry Greensmith, and they had a least one son. Alf was cremated at Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria.
