Lindsay was the second youngest of seven children born to Susan (nee Ringrove) and James Robert Lindsay. Having played for North Melbourne's VFA team in 1924, a newspaper report noted early in the 1925 season, "D Lindsay a former player is returning."
A North junior, Lindsay was member of the inaugural VFL North Melbourne team, debuting in a winning Round 1 game against Geelong. Except for Round 4, he played every game for the season, kicking seven goals. The Argus newspaper noted in the Round 16 game against Melbourne, "Lindsay kicked a fine angle goal."
In 1926 he played in 11 losing games with one draw and came second in North's goalkicking list with 24 goals.
At the age of 40 he enlisted in the Army and served in World War Two, discharged into a reserved occupation in August 1942. There is no record of Lindsay marrying. He is buried in Fawkner Cemetery, Victoria with a sister and brother.
