Archie's football career was delayed by World War One when he enlisted as a Private, aged 22, in 1917. He was shot in the hand while in France in 1918 and in 1919 he was mentioned in despatches for courage in raiding an enemy trench.
After his return and discharge in August 1919, Archie played 11 games for Essendon Association in 1920 as a half-back. He then joined North Melbourne VFA for 1922-24, missing only one game in those three seasons and playing in two finals in 1922.
He debuted in North Melbourne's VFL team in the first game in May 1925, selected in the back pocket, and notched up 12 games during the season. In 1926 he played in only Round 1, coincidentally against his first team Essendon.
Giles married Mary (nee Wilkinson) in 1913, and they had two children. Giles died at the young age of 46 and is buried at Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria.
