Born in North Melbourne in 1898, in a family of four, Bill was the second son of Margaret (nee Ludwick) and Herbert Evan McIntosh, who married in 1896. He played two games for North Melbourne's VFA team in 1920 and then was not sighted until he played again in 1923 (14 games, seven goals) and in 1924 (15 games, seven goals), where he was a solid team member.

At 187cm tall, he debuted as a follower for North Melbourne in the VFL in Round 1 in 1925 against Geelong and was named in The Age newspaper as among the best players for North. He followed that up playing in Rounds 2, 3, 7 and 8 and finally Round 15.

His football journey then appears to finish. He died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was cremated at Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria, where he rests in the Garden of Remembrance.
