Linton was born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, to John and Margaret (nee Sheehan) Linton, the youngest of 14 children.
Linton's football career began in 1915 with five games with Essendon A., before he enlisted in July 1915 as a Private in the army in World War One. He was wounded twice while in France, the second time at Polygon Wood, when a shell penetrated his chest, missing his heart by centimetres.
Returning home in late 1918 to recuperate, he picked up his football career several years later, playing from 1922-1924 in 36 games for North Melbourne's VFA team, including a VFA game in 1924 in Perth, playing in the centre. That year he won the Fitzgerald silver cup for "Most Popular Player".
He was Best on Ground in May 1924 against VFA Prahran. Known as a brilliant centreman, he debuted in Round 1, 1925 in the first North Melbourne VFL game, playing in 10 games that season.
In 1926 he played every game except Round 11 and then had a further three games in 1927. The following year he transferred to VFA Yarraville, playing 24 games over the next two years.
He had married Ruby Catherine (nee Forster) in 1923 and they had a daughter that year who died aged two, and later a son, also named Albert, who played for VFA teams Footscray and Williamstown, where he was named in the Williamstown Team of the Century. Albert Snr was cremated at Altona Memorial Park, Victoria.
