Smith began his football career at Essendon A in 1921 in the VFA. He transferred to North Melbourne VFA team and played 37 games across the seasons of 1922-24.

In 1925 he was elected as vice-captain, playing on the half-back flank in the inaugural North Melbourne VFL team in May 1925, when he was named in the best players.

Again among the best in Round 2, he was injured in the following game and did not appear again until Round 7. In a winning game against Melbourne in Round 16 he was described as "a first class defender".

His final game for North was in Round 2 in 1926 in a losing game against Hawthorn. Playing as a forward, he kicked his only goal for North. Although the Argus newspaper noted, "Smith a serviceable player", this is where his senior North Melbourne journey appears to end. Little is known of his family.
