Born to John and Jane Ellen (nee Roughan, sometimes spelt as Rowan) Britt, he was the seventh of 10 children all born in the country town of Warrenheip, near Ballarat. In 1922 he married Doris Vera (nee McNamara).

Britt began his football career with North in the VFA before crossing to VFA team Williamstown in 1924, playing in the grand final against Footscray at Arden St Oval.

Britt joined the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in January 1924 and played in the Fire Brigade team in the Wednesday League with fellow teammates Chris Gomez and Fred Metcalf. They were runners-up that year to the Railways team.

In April 1925 Britt was also named on the training list at Melbourne FC but he remained with Williamstown and was in the lead for the Best Player award. He transferred to North Melbourne FC on July 1, 1925, without a permit, remaining there until 1927.

His debut game 10 days later was in Round 10 in a losing game against Richmond at Arden St. He played all games until Round 15, when he broke his wrist.

After a solid season of 14 games in 1926 and only one game in 1927, he returned to Williamstown FC in 1929, winning the most unselfish trophy in 1930, and continued playing in the Wednesday League. He later captain-coached Auburn Football Club in 1931.

His son, also named Gerald, followed his father and joined the Fire Brigade in 1950, and served in the Army in World War Two. Britt died in Prahran, Victoria at the age of 75 and is buried in Cheltenham Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Victoria.
