In a brief career for North Melbourne, Kirkley debuted in Round 3 on May 16, 1925 in a losing game against South Melbourne.
He followed that with one more game in 1926, also in Round 3, against Melbourne at the MCG, when he was named in a group of five replacements for players who had been omitted or injured.
By 1940 Kirkley was living in Wagga Wagga, NSW, which is where he enlisted in World War Two, at the age of 39, serving in the Middle East with the 2/13 Battalion known as the Rats of Tobruk, then later in New Guinea.
He was one of five children born to Lena (nee Schonman) and Joseph Kirkley. He died in the Calvary Hospital, NSW and is buried in Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery, NSW.
