Sometimes named as Joe or Jack Wood, He was born in Hotham West to Mary Catherine (nee Steavans/Stevens) and Robert Wood and was the eighth of 13 children who also were born in the Hotham area.

Only 170cm tall, Wood was an outstanding North Melbourne junior, once in 1923 kicking 17 goals out of 29 against Carnegie FC as a centre forward.

After playing 11 games for North Melbourne's VFA team in 1924, kicking 24 goals, he debuted in the club's VFL team in Round 7, 1925 in a winning game against Footscray, kicking two goals.

Wood played in 10 rounds in 1925, kicking 27 goals and was North's leading goalkicker for the year. His best tally was six against South Melbourne in Round 14 in a year in which he kicked goals in every game he played.

In 1926 he played only three games in Rounds 1, 2 and 15, adding a further two goals to his tally.

He married Nellie (nee Miller) in 1927. His son, named after his father, pre-deceased him. Upon Wood's death in Fitzroy, he was cremated at Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria.
