Aged 26, Charlie first appeared for the 1925 North Melbourne VFL team in Round 5 against Melbourne at the MCG in front of 11,000 supporters, when he and two others were brought in as replacements.
He played consistently for the rest of the season, and followed that up as a regular team member in 1926-29 either as a half-back or rover. Newspaper reports from the match against Geelong in 1928 noted: "Healy in a smart exchange with Tyson resulted in a goal", "Healy was responsible for the next goal."
In 1930 he had a couple of games in the seconds and in five losing senior games for North Melbourne, and he hung up the boots after Round 18.
In 1928 he had married Lila Gladys (nee Peters) and they had three children. Healy enlisted in the RAAF in 1944 in World War Two at the age of 45, ranked as a Corporal, then requested release in 1947 due to the ill health of his wife and other family members. He died in Mordialloc and was cremated at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, Victoria.
