The youngest of five children born to Emily (nee Lang) and Alexander Wilson Watson. The family moved in the early 1900s from Flemington to Melton, which is where Donald was born.

Recruited from Kensington FC, he played 21 games for North Melbourne in the VFA in 1923 and 1924 before remaining with North when they joined the VFL in 1925, playing eight games in that season.

As a ruckman Watson had fairly solid seasons in 1926 and in 1927, which was his best year, playing 12 games.

Having only played three games in 1928 and two games in his last season in 1929, he took the opportunity to move to Bacchus Marsh FC, Victoria, as vice-captain and was then appointed playing coach/captain at a salary of two pounds per week and free board in 1931. Bacchus Marsh entered the Geelong Football League and, playing at centre half-forward, he led the team to the grand final that year against West Geelong, losing by 20 points. In 1933 he was reappointed in the dual roles of club secretary and playing coach.

Donald is buried in Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery, Victoria with his parents and sister Agnes.
