Harry was the sixth child of eight, born to Alberta (nee Nash) and Sylvester Greensmith. They were all born in Hotham, Victoria.
His first game for North Melbourne in the VFA was against Northcote FC in June 1920. He then appears to play for Railways FC in the Wednesday League, from where in 1923 he was recruited to North. In 1924 he played 10 games, kicking eight goals, for the club's VFA team in the forward pocket.
His first game for North Melbourne in their first VFL season was against St Kilda in Round 8 at Arden St, where The Prahran Telegraph noted, "Greensmith did well" and the Age newspaper reported, "Greensmith led an early attack and worked hard ".
He followed this up against Carlton in Round 9 at Princes Park, but this is where his senior career finishes.
In 1934 he married Emma Maud (nee Graham). Greensmith and his wife were cremated at Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria.
