Born in Caulfield, Victoria, Walsh was the second eldest of nine children to Edith (nee Simm) and John Walsh. The family moved several times, eventually settling in Ascot Vale, Victoria, where Walsh began his senior football career with Essendon FC (1918-1920, 25 games, 18 goals) and was their leading goalkicker in 1919.
He then played with Essendon VFA in 1920-21, then with North Melbourne in the VFA from 1921-24.
Debuting for North Melbourne against Geelong as full-back in their inaugural VFL game in 1925 at Corio Oval, he went onto to have an outstanding career, having switched from his previous forward positions. In a report in 1925 against Melbourne, Walsh was reported as "steady, reliable and clever".
In 1926 he came equal fifth in the Brownlow Medal count. He was a Victorian rep six times in 1925 and 1926 and was chosen for the 1927 Melbourne Carnival team, for which he didn't play due to a knee injury.
Walsh died in the Mercy Hospital, Victoria and is buried with his wife, Kathleen in Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria.
